Synopsis
Raymond Edward Smith was born illegitimate in 1940s Norristown, Pennsylvania. At three years old he was adopted and given a new name — Janifer — and a home on East Chestnut Street, in the heart of a vibrant Black neighborhood where everybody knew everybody and the blues drifted out of open windows on summer evenings.
Then, when Raymond was fourteen, his adoptive mother died, and the ground gave way beneath him. Set adrift with no anchor, he turned to the streets. He made the choices the streets offered a grieving boy, and he paid for them — dropping out of school and watching the future close down around him.
But this is not a story about falling. It is a story about getting up. With grit, the stubborn love of his community, and the discipline of sport, Raymond battled his way back: to a full athletic scholarship, to a college degree, and ultimately to three graduate degrees and a life in scholarship. Chestnut Hollow Blues is his unflinching, often funny, deeply human account of that journey — a testament to the boy who refused to be defined by the word "illegitimate."
