Born in 1940s Norristown, Pennsylvania, and adopted at the age of three, Raymond Edward Janifer grew up on East Chestnut Street — a block alive with family, music, and the rhythms of a tight-knit Black community. When his adoptive mother died, fourteen-year-old Raymond was set adrift. He hit the streets, made the choices the streets offered, and dropped out of school.
Chestnut Hollow Blues: Adventures of an Illegitimate Child is the story of how he fought his way back — to a full athletic scholarship, to the classroom, and eventually to three graduate degrees. It is a clear-eyed, big-hearted account of what was lost, what was survived, and what it took to come home to himself.

About the Author
Raymond Edward Janifer was born in 1940s Norristown, Pennsylvania, and adopted at the age of three into a family on East Chestnut Street — the street that gives Chestnut Hollow Blues its name and its heartbeat. The loss of his adoptive mother at fourteen sent his young life off course; sport, community, and sheer determination brought it back. He earned a full athletic scholarship, then went on to earn three graduate degrees, including a doctorate.
